Flagstaff, Ariz. – Michael Parenti, the award-winning author of Democracy for the Few and The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome, is coming to Northern Arizona University. Dr. Parenti will be speaking on the topic of political dissent and public deception, at the DuBois Center Ballroom, Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Parenti will discuss the methods of manipulation used by opinion makers to mislead the American public, as well as the nature of collective political perceptions in a time of empire, the preconditions of political belief, and the limitations of propaganda.

Dr. Parenti is an internationally-renowned lecturer and author of more than 20 books, as well as one of America's leading progressive political analysts. He has been a frequent guest on nationally-aired television and radio programs, such as Democracy Now! and Alternative Radio. His highly informative and entertaining books and talks have reached audiences across North America and abroad. His books have covered a wide range of subjects, including: American politics, foreign policy, media and culture; history; terrorism; political economy; and imperialism.

His most influential book, Democracy for the Few, now in its eighth edition, presents a critical analysis of American society, economic and political institutions. It is used as a college-level textbook in classrooms nationwide. The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome was selected as a Book of the Year for 2004 by Online Review of Books and Current Affairs .

Dr. Parenti received his Ph.D in political science from Yale University. He has taught political science at leading universities, including: University of Vermont, State University of New York at Stony Brook, SUNY Albany, Sarah Lawrence College, and Howard University.

In 2007, he was awarded a Certificate for Special Congressional Recognition by U.S. Representative Barbara Lee. He received a Career Achievement Award in 2003 from the Caucus for a New Political Science. He has won awards from Project Censored, the city of Santa Cruz, New Jersey Peace Action, the Social Science Research Council, the Society for Religion in Higher Education, and other organizations. For several years he was an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. He now serves on the board of judges for Project Censored, and on the advisory boards of Independent Progressive Politics Network, Education Without Borders, and the Jasenovic Foundation; as well as the editorial advisory boards of New Political Science and Nature, Society and Thought.
